Acupuncture Treatment
When you come for your first visit, you will fill out a complete health history, have your pulse taken and your tongue examined. This information helps determine what is out of balance in your body that may be causing disease or pain.
A holistic treatment approach is then created, taking into account all aspects of your lifestyle and constitution that might be interfering with continued good health.
The acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of thin, stainless steel needles into specific points along the affected energy channels. Sterile disposable needles are used to prevent infection and the transmission of disease.
Sometimes one feels a tingling or a sense of pressure after the needle is inserted. The needles are left in place for 20-40 minutes during which time most people enjoy a deep sense of relaxation.
In the days that follow, there may be an increase in energy and relief from symptoms. Because every body responds differently, the number of treatments indicated will vary and will depend on the severity and duration of the problem in relation to the individual’s physical constitution.
A course of treatment is generally considered to be 10 sessions, though chronic conditions may require more sessions. However, a patient’s condition will often show improvement in 1-5 treatments.
Herbs
In addition to acupuncture, herbal remedies will frequently be prescribed to augment your treatment, using a formula best suited to your particular constitution. Herbs may be in the form of pills, or as powders that are added to hot water to drink as a tea.
Chinese herbal formulas function differently than Western drugs in that they work to harmonize the various organ systems and address the root of the problem, in addition to affecting the symptoms.
Consideration is always made for Western drugs that a person is taking and the possible interaction with the herbs. Often the need for the medications is lessened or alleviated by balancing the system’s energy.
Consult
I will also often make recommendations for lifestyle changes in diet, exercise and supplements. The nature of one’s diet is very important to the balancing of energy and a large part of Traditional Chinese medical treatment. And certain exercise moves energy in ways similar to treatment.
